Migraines Q & A

What are migraines?

Migraines are one of the 150 or so types of headaches. They can be severe, resulting in hours and sometimes days when you find it hard or even impossible to function normally.

You may experience warning signs that a migraine is coming before an attack, such as changes in your mood or bowel habits. Aura is a specific sign of an impending migraine, where you experience visual disturbances like flashing lights or spots and lines before your eyes.

Aura may continue when the head pain develops, which is typically severe. It may affect one side of your head in particular and be so intense that it forces you to lie somewhere quiet and dark until it eases off. You might also have nausea and vomiting, dizziness, and weakness.

Why do I get migraines?

The root cause of migraines isn’t clear. It’s likely a combination of things, such as your hormones, stress levels, and tiny structural abnormalities in your brain. Many people who get migraines find they have specific triggers, common ones being:

  • Red wine
  • Aged cheese
  • Chocolate
  • Caffeine
  • Salty foods
  • Weather changes

You’re more likely to get migraines if other members of your family have them, and they typically start in your teens or 20s.

What can I do about my migraines?

Finding a way to relieve or prevent migraines can make a significant difference to your quality of life, particularly if you get them frequently. Identifying your triggers is an important first step, as it helps you avoid the substances or situations that set off your migraines.

Dr. Shiha can also help by examining your head and neck to see if you have any subluxations (misaligned vertebrae) or problems like overly tense muscles.

He can gently realign the structures and tissues in your neck using chiropractic methods such as the NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) technique. Chiropractic care also reduces nerve irritation, strengthens your muscles, and improves blood flow to your brain.

These treatments are effective for other types of headaches as well as migraines.
